Merien pinnannousun johtava ekspertti maailmassa, Tukholman yliopiston prof. Nils Mörner on lähettänyt avoimen kirjeen Malediivien presidentille,jossa hän syyttää tätä valehtelusta. Kun Mörnerin tutkimusryhmä oli esittänyt tuloksensa 2001 ja hän piti niistä lehdistökonferenssia Malediiveilla, lähetys katkaistiin kesken.
